With regard to the Oct. 29 news article “Sheriff fires deputy who tossed S.C. teen”: At anytime before the altercation, the student could have put down her phone and headed off the undesirable outcome.

While the officer’s actions might have been extreme, minors need to respect authority personnel such as police and teachers.

I might have bungie-corded the student to the chair and carried the chair out to the hall as an alternative to upturning the chair. I’ve solved a great many problems with duct tape and bungie cords.
