Ted Dunn: GA should do job on time
Regarding the Oct. 27 news article “Raleigh legislator forms session limits group”: I think freshman state Rep. Gary Pendleton has exactly the wrong approach.
What will happen when the session ends and there is no consensus? When I worked for a company and we had a problem, we worked at it until we arrived at a solution. When our state and federal legislators have a problem, they take a break for a week and go home. Pendleton’s apparent solution is to go home for good!
These people sort out their positions, and we elected them to do the job of running our government. They should stay at it until it gets done.
I would motivate the legislators by reducing their salaries if the session runs longer than scheduled. Remember that when they cannot agree on issues, and session runs late, we have the added expense of paying their staff personnel as well as their per-day allowance.
My answer to Pendleton is to get the job done and get it done on schedule. Otherwise, we will have to find someone else to do it.
