Rob Ahlin: GOP debaters prevailed

Reading the Nov. 2 editorial “Debates go awry” describing the latest Republican debate as a “snooze fest,” it seems we were watching different debates. The one I saw was anything but boring.

The CNBC moderators provided the most egregious example of media bias I have ever seen in this format. Far from whining, the Republicans counterattacked.

Ted Cruz’s rejoinder was a tour de force, rhetorically nailing their hides to the wall. And Chris Christie’s quip about being rude even by New Jersey standards was a nice touch.

Then there was the battle between the two Floridians over Marco Rubio’s senatorial work habits. Rubio seemed to come out ahead in the exchange, but it was fun hearing about the three-day French work week.

Despite the obstacles, most of the candidates succeeded in conveying their vision for America’s future. There was also vigorous sparring over tax policy. They agreed only that the status quo is completely unacceptable.

By contrast, consider the recent Democratic debate. Second-place contender Bernie Sanders refused to challenge Hillary Clinton even on her most vulnerable point – her questionable ethics. Instead, we were treated to her tired 20th century ideas versus his wearisome 19th century ones. Talk about a snooze fest!
