Samuel A. Johnson Jr.: A service job, too

I join others in protest of raises given to top university administrators. My protest is based on the sheer size of the base salaries. How does anyone dispose of over $300,000 annual income without either increasing their carbon footprint to unconscionable levels, piling cash up in savings or simply giving it back in some form?

My protest is also based on the question about what motivates these administrators. Apparently the board feels that these raises are necessary to stay competitive.

How can intelligent, talented and very well-paid administrators, who are so admired, be so shallow that they would value a raise (on top of their already significant salary) above the opportunity to simply serve the university and make it better? I cannot believe that they would and hope that they will reject these raises.
