Harold Bruen: Out-of-touch leaders
Placed in the context of the huge pay increases for the UNC president-designate and a number of the university systems chancellors, Matt Buys’ Nov. 1 Point of View “The exodus” reminded me of how out of touch our legislature and university leaders are with the reality facing North Carolina’s education future.
As a retiring adjunct faculty member at Wake Tech, I am fully aware of both the joy and pain endured by our full-time faculty members in our educational institutions. Most are highly respected teachers who work very hard to provide educational value for their students. Yet their work is consistently undervalued by the legislators who provide funding for their salaries. They and our students deserve better.
All the highly sought-after administrators in the system cannot replace what is being lost because of this short-sightedness and neglect. Hopefully, we are only one election away from rectifying this deteriorating situation.
