The Nov. 23 column “The price we must pay in high deductibles” by Megan McArdle was spot on, as insurance is indeed a financial tool for unexpected setbacks, not intended to cover routine maintenance.

As costs escalate due to adverse selection – the sick buy insurance, get treatment, then drop their policies – higher deductibles will be mandated to offset higher premiums. Agreed.

And why the wrench as artwork as the ACA was doomed to self-destruction?
