David M. Warren: Manual mayhem

Josh Shaffer’s Nov. 26 commentary on learning to drive a car with manual transmission was entertaining, accurate and timely. The education of my son, McLean, has been interrupted by other instruction at Elon University, so Thanksgiving afternoon was a good opportunity for me to teach the much-neglected chapter involving the art of manual transmission. The State Fairgrounds parking lot with its flat ground, compared with the Dix hills that Dan Barkin navigated, presented a perfect place for the lesson. Shaffer’s account could have been the perfect play-by-play.
