Charles R. Schroeder: Hastings played it well

Regarding the Dec. 1 editorial “Lawmakers can’t skirt expense rules”: I sure would like to know how Rep. Kelly Hastings is able to get reimbursed at the federal rate since, whether he knows it or not, he is actually an employee of this state. This, plus reimbursing his family to see him being sworn in, is at best a stretch and at worst inappropriate.

How many people who actually work for a living could benefit by requiring New York or California salaries because they “can’t run a car on 29 cents a mile”?
