We are told in the Christmas story that the three wise men consulted King Herod concerning the birth of a child who would be the future king of Israel. Herod, fearing a loss of power, instigated the murder of a number of his citizens, and Mary and Joseph fled their home country to preserve the life of their child.
Even if we ignore the later admonition to see Jesus in “the least of these,” the thought that Jesus too was a refugee might inform our thoughts and words concerning current refugees from Middle Eastern power struggles.
