Tom Matthews: Talking trash

My wife and I travel from our home in the Wilmington area to family in Raleigh. Our travel route is Interstate 40. Never in our lives have we seen so much roadside liter.

We are talking about mile after mile after mile after mile of trash, garbage and junk from thousands of plastic bottles to cardboard boxes, from fast food bags to broken chairs and, yes, from mattresses to rusted propane tanks. What an absolute disgrace!

And, by the way, U.S. 17 around the Leland/Belville area is just as bad.

Perhaps our license tags should read “First in Roadside Trash” in lieu of “First in Flight.” Gov. Pat McCrory and NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson are accountable and need to get with the program!
