In the Jan. 4 Point of View “Another round of blaming the Other,” Scott Huler argued his case well for the power of the dark side to seduce us. How could an advanced Western country possibly lose itself in the Nazi nightmare?

It has been easy since World War II for us in the U.S. to feel morally superior to such emotional hijacking. And yet now?

We have our own charismatic leaders appealing to the basest of our fears, and too many find it comforting to stigmatize a whole religion for our ills.

The dark within us is brother to what twisted the Germans away into being lost.
