Cheryl Holmes Hibbs: Christian cares

I was disturbed by a statement in Tim Funk’s January 4 Focus column “Graham will try to rally the Christian conservative vote” about Franklin Graham.

The writer said that evangelical Christians “tend to care most about social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage.” As a Christian, I sincerely hope that is not the case!

I hope that most Christians care most about sharing the love of Jesus Christ through our words and actions, and letting others know about the full life here on earth and eternal life in heaven that Christ has promised to those who believe in Him.

I hope that we care more about the plight of Syrian refugees and children in the Triangle who go hungry during Christmas break than we do about the social issues the writer mentions.

While the article talks mostly about Graham’s political views, thankfully, it does at least mention the wonderful ministries of Samaritan’s Purse, the organization that Graham founded. When disaster strikes anywhere in the world, Samaritan’s Purse is there to provide food, water, clothing and shelter, in Jesus’ name.

Recently, Samaritan’s Purse delivered 11 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children all over the world.

These are the things I hope Christians care most about.
