Your editorial board constantly repeats the myth that sales taxes are up under Republicans (“N.C. tax surge is a tax shift,” Jan. 17 editorial) and constantly prints the same error from letter-writers (“Taxes add up,” Jan. 18).
While there have been additions to the sales tax base in 2013 and 2015, you completely forget about the 2011 reduction of 16 percent in the state sales tax rate, which dwarfs the additions to the sales tax base.
In the last four fiscal years, the cumulative reduction in state sales tax receipts has been over $4 billion.
The sales tax is a regressive tax. It is also nondeductible for 98 percent of taxpayers who itemize. So why can’t you give credit where credit is due?
