Chris Wellons: Socialism benefits

Regarding the Jan. 19 letter “Sanders’ socialism”: I remember after World War II when my dad returned from the Navy fighting in the Pacific, he took a job in Washington, D.C. The family would often drive south to visit my grandparents in Lumberton.

Some of my earliest memories are those long car trips through small Southern towns in the 1950s, until the year President Eisenhower initiated the Interstate Highway System.

My dad never mentioned the word “socialism,” but he sure loved driving on those gleaming new “super highways” back home to North Carolina.
