Denise Bricker: Painful tax changes

Regarding the Jan. 21 letter “Sales tax reductions”: So Rep. Paul Stam believes we are all in error by believing our taxes went up.

In 2011 the tax rate went from 7.75 percent to 6.75 percent. Saving 1 percent was nice, not great, but I’ll take what I can get.

In 2015 the changes made to the tax code mean that all my DMV fees went up, sales tax got added to movie tickets and other admissions, car repairs, warranties, repairs and installation of appliances, etc.

He’s right. Sales tax is regressive, and we are giving credit where credit is due. The GOP-run legislature just made things more painful for most of us and benefited a small group. Time for a change.
