David Stinson: Dastardly standards
Finally! I am beginning to understand our Republican-controlled legislature’s objection to the Common Core math standards. It seems the problem lies with the federal government and these standards being forced upon our children by the Obama administration.
A letter in the Dec. 27 Sunday Forum (“Core promotes problem-solving”) includes a quote directly from the standards themselves. “Common Core’s Math Practice Standards demand, among other things, that students persevere in solving problems, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments, critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics (and) attend to precision.’”
I guess the argument goes that if the Obama administration can foist this liberal tripe upon our children, where will it stop? At least it’s consistent with the other actions this legislature has enacted.
