Phyllis Siegel: What we pay for

Regarding the Feb. 4 news articles “Top UNC leaders get raises” and “Rolls fall at UNC teacher prep programs”: Some of the raises are very impressive, up to 4, 5 and even 7 percent adding on to even more impressive salaries.

Why aren’t the raises for teachers commensurate with those of administrators? Is it surprising that enrollments for teacher prep programs are down?

Education loans are overwhelming to young people recently out of college. How can they possibly repay them with low starting salaries and low salary increases?

I was lucky. I didn’t have to support a family on my salary. Not everyone has the luxury of following his or her dreams.
