Thomas McKee: The GOP’s education plan

Our Republican N.C. legislators strongly believe that society is best served by unregulated free markets. In the case of those considering a career as a teacher in North Carolina, the free market system is working exactly as one might expect, with The N&O reporting that since 2010 30 percent fewer of college-bound students have enrolled in North Carolina’s schools of education (“Rolls fall at UNC teacher prep programs,” Feb. 4 news article).

Given the disdain that the current N.C. government has for teachers, this free-market outcome is hardly surprising. However, in the GOP’s eyes this might even be a favorable development for it provides an excuse to further cut the higher-education budget.

After all, the GOP-favored charter schools don’t need to have all of their teachers certified.
