Jim Wiegand: A less-taxing location
Ten years ago we decided to move to North Carolina when I retired. I researched the areas around Raleigh and found that the cost of living in Wake County was much higher than some other areas. We bought a home across the county line from Wake, and over the years we’ve noticed that Wake County is always floating a request for higher property taxes.
I understand things are needed, but the county recently asked for and was granted almost $1 billion in bonds for school construction. Now the county board wants an increase in sales tax, and it wants to sell other bonds to pay for schools that will be paid for, but not voted on, by the taxpayers.
With all the recent property tax increases, Wake County sure has made my choice to move to Harnett County a very good one. Not only am I avoiding excess taxation, the Wake County board is increasing the value of my home since it is a more affordable residence.
All I can say is keep up the good work because I may want to sell my house in a few years, and I want to maximize the profits.
