John Cole: Free speech windfall

In his Feb. 15 column “The progressives’ itch to regulate speech,” George Will argued that corporations are people and therefore entitled to unregulated influence over elections as stated in the Citizens United Supreme Court decision because this is considered an exercise of free speech.

To say that corporations or individuals can influence the governing of this country proportionately to their wealth is illogical, is contrary to our democratic principles and turns a blind eye to the fact that we are currently being governed by people who freely admit that they have to spend the majority of their time chasing after this money if they expect to get into or stay in office.
