Barry Buehler: More fact checking
Regarding John Drescher’s Feb. 20 column “N&O joins PolitiFact in accuracy checks”: “PolitiFact and The News & Observer will join forces to check the accuracy of statements made by candidates and their campaigns.”
How about a system to check on the accuracy of statements made by News & Observer reporters and editorial writers? That would also be a positive step.
Most people take statements from candidates and their campaigns with a grain of salt. Too many people take what a newspaper prints as gospel truth. Newspaper readers should not have to rely on letters to the editor, which may or may not be published.
A team of (volunteer?) ombudsmen for The N&O would be a public service.
