Jim Pomeranz: Merge ECSU with community college

Regarding the March 10 news article “UNC audit reveals ECSU troubles”: With all due respect to Elizabeth City State University, its historical and worthwhile background, its current academic and financial issues and the effort by the UNC system to bring it back to life, maybe it’s time for a joint effort by the UNC system and N.C. Community College System to merge ECSU (1,500-plus enrollment) and Elizabeth City-based College of the Albemarle (3,000-plus enrollment) into one academic entity to serve that area of North Carolina.

It could be a win-win for the students with a wider range of resources, offering two-year and four-year degrees while retaining the historical nature of ECSU and the modern approach of the community college.

Jim Pomeranz
