Alice Pettyjohn: Subsidizing religious schools

Thank you for the March 3 Point of View “A scary program set for expansion” on North Carolina’s voucher program.

It astounds me that North Carolina taxpayers are subsidizing private religious schools through the so-called Opportunity Scholarships. Our taxes are paying private religious schools to indoctrinate students in religious practice.

Voucher programs have no accountability how taxpayer funds are spent, no minimum qualifications for teachers (except a high school diploma), no requirements for curriculum and no means of assessing student performance.

Education in North Carolina is in a downhill spiral, and taxpayers are footing the bill.

Alice Pettyjohn
