Lewis Margolis: The urgent football lesson
Regarding the March 10 editorial “A Tar Heel lost”: Let us indeed mourn the gruesome passing of Ryan Hoffman, the latest public victim of football’s repeated trauma to the brain.
The lesson is not, as the editorial board suggested, “to push on to help others who might be suffering from – or could be spared – CTE.” The urgent lesson is that those responsible for nurturing minds – universities and high schools – should not allow or encourage this brain-damaging sport to continue while researchers explore prevention and treatment.
Who benefits from the drumbeat of damaged brains in our sons, while we wait for answers?
Lewis Margolis
