J.M. Barnes: Backward and downward

Regarding the March 24 news article “LGBT protections end as McCrory signs bill”: The actions of our North Carolina legislative Republicans invalidating Charlotte’s recent sensible ordinance and legislating discrimination of certain North Carolinians is unconscionable.

Please remind me how the actions taken on March 23 reduce government regulation, reduce taxes, justify the cost of a special session and create jobs (I believe North Carolina’s unemployment rate is currently higher, and has been, than the national average)?

It seems our Republican legislative leaders are only interested in taking North Carolina backward, damaging public education, discriminating against women and our LGBT neighbors and reducing taxes and government regulation for the rich and corporations.

To listen to their re-election rhetoric, however, we may think they are acting in the best interest of all. I don’t think so.

J.M. Barnes
