H.W. Bowles: UNC leaders must do right
Regarding the April 1 news article “2003 report contradicts UNC stance on independent studies”: The fact that a small minority of the UNC family failed to act with integrity in the now distant past, condoning essentially free-for-all grades in the interest of maintaining athletic eligibility and, by extension, winning.
Now its highest leaders are on deck to act with integrity. Will they accept the advice of their lawyers and insist that hundreds of students taking thousands of hours of nonexistent classes was technically not a violation of university rules due to semantics and nuance, thus keeping something that is not theirs by any definition of integrity – a number of games in several sports in the “W” column? We shall see.
