Herbert Reichlin: Refusal of service returning

Summer 1944, I was 18 and in infantry basic training at Camp Wolters in Texas. On our first weekend pass, three of us went into Mineral Wells, the nearest town.

One of us was from New Mexico, had a Hispanic name and did not look Anglo. He was refused service. We left. The refusal of service was repeated in Weatherford, a bigger town than Mineral Wells.

Texas law gave those restaurant owners that privilege, the same privilege that HB2 now gives to small business. They will be free to refuse service.

There are not enough biblical scholars in the police force to assure that the refusal is legitimate and based on the Old or New Testament.
