Marcus Henry: Bicyclists must observe laws like drivers
In response to the April 11 column “Five myths about bicycling”: Regarding point No. 2, bicycles are vehicles under North Carolina traffic law, and cyclists have the same “rights and responsibilities” as car drivers. Cyclists must ride in the same direction as cars, have a headlight and a rear reflector at night, stop at stop signs and red lights and use hand-signals to signal turns.
There is no law prohibiting cyclists from group rides, nor are cyclists required to get off the road if slower than car traffic. State police, cyclists and drivers need to know the law, and it needs to be enforced.
