Ellen Strozak Canavan: Not a pig’s life
Thanks for the story on Henrietta, the pig who is receiving the love and care that she needs (“Henrietta to undergo surgery Monday at N.C. State vet school,” April 11 news article). She has a name and a personality.
I’ve seen the truckloads of 6-month-old pigs headed to their deaths. It happens every day, all year long.
If only they could be treated as individuals, with names and recognition of their unique qualities. If only they could have the life a pig should have, caring for their young, foraging for food, taking mud baths. That is what they are denied. Are we comfortable with that?
