Benjamin Stormo: McCrory rushed bill
I thought it was appropriate that the April 17 letter “Selective outrage from PC elite” from Gov. Pat McCrory, in which he asked for “real dialogue” of “complex issues,” was directly under Ned Barnett’s column “A tangled plan ensnared McCrory in HB2” describing how the bill was passed and signed within 24 hours during a special session with no public discussion.
I wonder, in that period, how much “real dialogue” McCrory had with members of the LGBT community? I wonder if he had “real dialogue” with Jennifer Roberts, the mayor of Charlotte, to discuss the issue with her? I wonder if he had “real dialogue” with the lawyers from the UNC system who might lose millions of dollars in Title IX federal funding? I wonder if he had “real dialogue” with the CEOs of Deutsche Bank or PayPal? Somehow I don’t think so.
McCrory had a chance for dialogue and instead he chose to rush through a discriminatory bill. The time for dialogue was before this monstrosity made North Carolina look terrible.
