Joseph J. Bufalini: Aerating lake not a solution

Regarding the April 16 letter “More science needed”: Since the writer is the director of science for Medora Corp., the manufacturer of the SolarBees that are to aerate the water of Jordan Lake, perhaps he can explain how the aeration will remove the phosphates and nitrates present in the lake.

The phosphorus and nitrogen are already at their maximum oxidation states, so further aeration will do nothing to remove these pollutants! Aeration is only a temporary solution to algae removal; the underlying cause will remain. The only solution is to remove and prevent pollutants to enter the lake.
