Charlie Delmar: Pandering to ignorance
The May 4 column “Releasing the wolves of hate all over again” about attorney general candidate Buck Newton stated, “At a rally in Raleigh last week, Newton did his hate-filled predecessors from decades past proud, elevating himself, in his mind, by demonizing others.”
That column, along with statements Newton made in the linked video (nando.com/newtonvideo), reminded me of statements made by a candidate for U.S. Senate in Florida in the 1950s: “My opponent matriculates in the bathroom – and his sister is a thespian.”
Now that was a level of demagogic fear-mongering, pandering to the fears of ignorant masses, to which Newton might want to aspire.
