Mark Parker: Learning about World War II

As a kid I’d spend hours reading of World War II air, land and sea battles. They were a form of adventure to me, but as I approach my 50th birthday I have a deeper understanding of the grit those men and women possessed and the sacrifices they made. I am saddened so many of our youth have no real awareness of that war or the causes.

Thank you for the May 29 news article “Iwo Jima Marine urges vets to talk about war” and for your spotlight on Iwo Jima.

And thanks to George Cattelona – one of the greatest men in Raleigh!
