Lawrence Evans: Meddling conservatives
You ran a front-page story “National conservatives critical of Wake’s plan to drop valedictorians” on June 4 about the objections of some right-wing talk show hosts to the decision by Wake County schools to substitute Latin honors for valedictorians. Why front page?
Who cares what blowhards like Rush Limbaugh think about it? The decision is a wise one.
If we want to encourage academic excellence, recognize the groups that achieve it, not just a single person chosen more or less arbitrarily (because of “weighting”) to exemplify it.
But the main point is this: How is it in any way “conservative” to stick their nose into things they know next to nothing about? From how a woman deals with a bad pregnancy, to who sleeps with whom, to what’s under the clothes of the person in the next bathroom stall, it’s none of their business. Butt out.
