Tommy Brown: Gun-free zones don’t help
In the June 23 letter “More guns, less safety,” the writer asked, “There are millions of guns out there, so why are we less safe from gunfire in our schools, churches, entertainment venues and our homes?” The answer is lack of common sense. Unfortunately, common sense isn’t as common as it used to be.
When I see a sign on the door of a restaurant stating it’s a “gun-free zone,” I shake my head in disbelief. Only law-abiding residents honor these requests. Criminals are criminals because they don’t obey laws.
If I am in a restaurant and someone comes in to rob and/or shoot people, I’d rather there be someone, anyone, in there with a gun, legally, who gives the rest of us a chance to survive.
Gun-free zones just gives the criminals more confidence that they can do criminal acts without interference from innocent people. Common sense.
