Shirley Ellis: A vote regretted

Regarding the June 23 news article “Police: Durham council member should apologize”: I haven’t often regretted a vote, but there’s a first time for everything, I guess. Jillian Johnson for Durham City Council is my regret!

Since being elected, she has made clear her dislike for the police. As a community activist I suppose it is her privilege to march and protest, but she needs to remember that she was elected to represent the people – all the people – including law enforcement. If unable to do so, she should resign.

Her obvious bias against the police makes it difficult to respect her decisions as a councilor. As a taxpayer, I would remind Johnson that she no longer speaks only for herself.

We all need to remember that law enforcement personnel are prohibited from publicly expressing their opinions.

Shirley Ellis
