Rep. Bert Jones: Saunders’ unfair reporting

Regarding Barry Saunders’ June 23 column “Protecting us from hordes of food stamp-using lottery winners – Saunders”: This is unfortunately an example of the biased and shoddy reporting we have come to expect.

Saunders emailed our office at 5:51 p.m. with “questions” for me to respond to by email, just two minutes before posting his character assassination piece against me and my motives in the passage of HB1047 – a bill requiring lottery winners over $2,250 (as is required for tax reporting) to also be reported to DHHS for crosschecks on food stamp recipients.

Of course, he also failed to report that the bill had multiple sponsors and passed the House by a rather wide margin and with some bipartisan support. It is yet another sad commentary on the death of fair and objective reporting from your newspaper.

Rep. Bert Jones

Republican, N.C. District 65

Reidsville
