David H. Bland: Bad taxing plan

The June 28 Point of View “The dangerous TABOR” by Stephanie Carson should be a must read for all who do not find themselves in the upper 10 percent of North Carolina’s taxpayers.

All of the previous “tax cuts” enacted by the Republican majority since 2011 have had corresponding increases in various consumption taxes that disproportionately fall on the middle- and low-wage earners.

We are already facing an annual revenue shortfall of over $1 billion. This shortfall will result in further consumption tax increases coupled with a reduction in essential services, including education health care and the environment.

Further, if this taxing philosophy is enshrined in our Constitution, future administrations will find themselves in the same boat as Colorado, and local governments will be forced to rely more and more on property taxes.
