John F. Bridgers: Brits show true democracy

The British voters are to be congratulated on their decision to leave the European Union. Their vote was both a victory for democracy and national independence. They should be thankful for having a parliamentary form of government that made such a referendum possible.

Unfortunately, the American voter will not have a similar opportunity to vote on whether to stay with our current political system that is dominated by big money interests or leave it in favor of a more democratic political system that serves the interest of all Americans.

The time has come to abandon our “one dollar, one vote system” currently in operation in favor of a “one person, one vote” system called for by the principles of democracy. If given the opportunity, I am confident that Americans would vote overwhelmingly in favor of democracy.
