Peter van Dorsten: Zane unconvincing

J. Peder Zane’s latest apology for the bankrupt logic of the Trump GOP machine offered nothing new and just perpetuated the sad state of our political discourse ( “Shameful attempts to blame GOP ‘bigotry’,” June 22 column).

Writing of the tragedy in Orlando, he focused not on possible solutions, how people of differing opinions might look for common ground. Instead he just repeated lame opinions, chastising the president for not stopping ISIL internet propaganda or for advocating repeal of the Second Amendment or for not acting with urgency to combat terrorism, baseless assertions all.

When Zane fulminates mindlessly, regurgitating right-wing agitprop, perhaps he could do it elsewhere. A columnist should seek to enlighten and convince, not just pound dully on partisan talking points.
