Jeff Ward: No flushing HB2 stink
I thought your June 7 Focus piece “Lessons from a city with transgender bathroom rights for 10 years” about transgender bathrooms in Washington, D.C., was well done. However, I don’t believe our General Assembly is remotely worried about opposite-sex bathroom attacks in North Carolina.
While I think this part of the bill is so totally off the wall and has no merit whatsoever, I believe our esteemed GA already knew that bathroom attacks were and are a myth.
One only has to look at the add-ons to this bill that, on their face, have absolutely nothing to do with the bathroom portion of the bill. Those are the inability to bring discrimination cases in state court and the ridiculous limit of the minimum wage.
This whole House Bill 2 bathroom issue is nothing more than a not-so-subtle diversion set up to push through favorable protections for Republican business donors.
All three portions of this bill will be flushed (pun intended) via the courts, but in the meantime the reputation of North Carolina will have to endure the stink for years to come. Way to go, GOP!
