The special June 7 primary election costing taxpayers $9.5 million, the growing legal bills incurred by the state, along with the mounting business losses from House Bill 2 cited in your July 8 editorial “HB2 tab runs up” all derive from the same root cause: partisan gerrymandering.
Our deeply flawed redistricting system that allows politicians to draw their own voting maps has resulted in noncompetitive districts, where nearly half of all legislative races are decided before a single vote is cast.
In turn, state legislators have no incentive to compromise on issues like HB2 and economic development. It is time that North Carolina joined Iowa, Ohio and a dozen states with fair and independent redistricting so that elected officials are accountable to the people of our state.
