Regarding the July 26 Point of View “Michael Jordan speaks out on shootings, racial unrest”: With a bold step, this NBA legend, team owner and fellow UNC Tar Heel vowed that he can “no longer stay silent” and not address the storm clouds that now swirl around communities across the United States.
Jordan said: “We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported.”
On top of his words, Jordan made contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Though some questioned (and privately criticized) Jordan’s reluctance to speak out on social issues, including those pertaining to race, his gesture must be well received.
It is one powerful slam dunk.
Perhaps, his openness will open the floodgates of silence and prompt other wealthy, high-profile athletes, rappers, musicians, etc., to join the growing chorus of sad voices speaking out and marching in the streets against hateful rhetoric and gun violence.
