Julius H. Cromwell: N.C. losing money due to HB2

Regarding the July 23 Sports column “Time for ACC to follow NBA lead” by Luke DeCock: His view is shared by many sports and entertainment entities. He briefly touched on the fact that even though the CIAA has denounced House Bill 2 it would not move its basketball tournament from Charlotte.

While it is true that the CIAA does not have the kind of financial resources that the ACC has, it does, however, have one of the best and most lucrative conferences in the country.

Each year the tournament generates on average $40 million for Charlotte. The CIAA extended the contract with Charlotte an additional six years.

The thought of possibly losing $40 million because of the controversial HB2, in addition to revenue from entertainers, concerts and other events, should be reason enough for Gov. Pat McCrory and the General Assembly to re-think their intractable position on this discriminatory legislation.
