Wendy Hamilton Hoelscher: Blue Star reminder
Regarding the July 29 news article “N.C. GOP chief apologizes for mistaken criticism of Tim Kaine”: The N.C. Republican Party has apologized for the attack on Sen. Tim Kaine for wearing a Blue Star service pin recognizing his son’s military service.
The good news is that more Americans understand the meaning of the symbol and perhaps will reflect upon the sacrifice of those who serve our nation and their families when they see it displayed.
The bad news is that we, as a nation, are so disconnected from those who serve that it takes political grandstanding to remind us what that Blue Star means.
