Dennis Cullen: GOP lacking charity

In 2013, the N.C. General Assembly passed a voter ID law. Last week, a federal appeals court struck down our law, saying it deliberately targeted our state’s African-American voters.

A few months ago, our General Assembly’s passage of House Bill 2 created a national uproar, bringing shame to the people of our state. Over the last several years, our General Assembly has allowed our teachers’ salaries to slide from near the national average to near the bottom. Our state income taxes have been cut, but our state sales tax has been expanded to include a tax on services. These measures were designed to enrich our wealthy and to take more tax money from our working class.

I am a conservative white male whose parents taught me to embrace the virtues of faith, hope and charity. I have seen little or no charity emanating from our General Assembly. Instead, I have seen too many laws passed by a group of mean-spirited, self-serving politicians.

The time has come for right-minded North Carolinians to vote these people out.
