Mary C. Williams: Women taking fall at UNC

After news of the UNC athletics scandal broke, the first person to suffer was Mary Willingham, fired for exposing academic misconduct. After that, a young woman who had been a tutor for athletes was charged with offering impermissible benefits. Jan Boxill was fired and accused of these infractions as well. Later, it was rumored that Sylvia Hatchell might not have her coaching contract renewed.

Meanwhile, those responsible for offering fraudulent courses are enjoying comfortable retirement, and male coaches and others involved with UNC athletics have been well protected.

Among those blamed, only women have suffered real trouble and financial hits or threats of them. And I’m sure no one is surprised that this is so.
