Jonathan C. Halperen: Our only hope

An Aug. 28 letter-writer said that “[Democrats] have been in charge for eight years.” We have had a Democratic president, but Congress and many state legislatures are dominated by Republicans. President Obama has tried repeatedly to counter the Republican policies that are ruining our country. We are now in a second Gilded Age, with the top 1 percent of earners gaining more and more of the country’s wealth while the rest of us have the screws put to us. Add two disastrous wars and ever more attempts to restrict the basic human right of abortion, and you have the actions that landed us in this whole mess.

I am old enough to remember when the Republican Party had some principles. That time ended in 1976 when Tom Ellis and his gang took it over. The Democrats are not much better, but they are the only hope we have.
