Roster reversal: Duke receiver Aaron Young returns after considering transfer

Aaron Young remains part of Duke’s football program after all.

Two weeks after announcing he planned to play elsewhere as a graduate transfer next season, the redshirt senior wide receiver has decided to stay with the Blue Devils.

The school announced Monday that Young has removed his name from the NCAA Transfer Portal.

A 6-2, 200-pound receiver from Murrieta, Calif., Young played in only two games last season due to a hamstring injury suffered during a September practice.

He caught four passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in Duke’s 34-14 season-opening win over Army last Aug. 31. But he was injured four days later.

On Jan. 29, he used his Twitter feed to announce he was entering his name the NCAA’s transfer database with the intention of playing his final season at a new school.

“I will forever be thankful for getting an opportunity to earn a degree and play football at this university,” Young wrote at the time, adding that this “is not an easy decision for me.”

Since then, though, Young changed his mind and Duke coach David Cutcliffe welcomed him back to the program.

“Aaron has been an integral part of our program since arriving on campus in the summer of 2015,” Cutcliffe said in a statement. “Duke is the best place for Aaron to continue his growth as a student-athlete and he’s excited to get back to work with his teammates in preparation for spring practice.”
