Replay: Hurricanes keep their winning streak going
The Carolina Hurricanes continued to be unbeatable in the young NHL season, the area college basketball teams finished their exhibition games with the new season about to begin and NC State kept pace in the ACC Atlantic Division race.
Those were among the highlights of the previous week in the Triangle sports world during a busy time on the calendar with multiple sports converging.
Here’s a look back:
Win No. 9 for Hurricanes
Carolina started the NHL season with an unbeaten October and carried the winning streak into November with a 4-3 comeback win at Chicago on Wednesday night.
“Throughout a season you’ve got to be able to win in a lot of different ways, and tonight was a different way to win a hockey game,” said Canes center Derek Stepan, who had a goal and assist against the Blackhawks.
Chicago led 3-1 in the second period only to see the Hurricanes roar back to remain unblemished. Carolina won despite being shorthanded for eight minutes of the third period.
Starting the season 9-0 put the Hurricanes one win shy of tying the NHL record for most consecutive wins to start a season.
Leary rallied NC State
Three fourth-quarter touchdown passes by quarterback Devin Leary led the N.C. State Wolfpack to a 28-13 win over Louisville at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The win allowed the Wolfpack (6-2, 3-1 ACC) to remain in striking distance of unbeaten Wake Forest (8-0, 5-0) in the Atlantic Division race. N.C. State and Wake Forest will play Nov. 13. The Wolfpack is also now bowl-eligible.
The final practice games
N.C. State and North Carolina each played exhibition games with Division II Elizabeth City State, with Duke having played its lone public exhibition on Oct. 30 against Winston-Salem State, as the Triangle’s ACC men’s basketball teams finished their tune-ups.
They all did so on their home courts as well. And they did it with fans in the stands, a marked difference from a season earlier when the COVID-19 pandemic limited or eliminated attendance.
